There is a great number of different diseases of joints. Among them is arthrosis, especially deforming arthrosis. 5 % of the population of the Earth suffer from this disease.

DDH (Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip or Congenital hip dislocation) is one of the most severe and frequently occurring diseases of children’s locomoto system. This disease arises when dysplasia of the hip joint, especially dysplastic acetabulum takes place.

There are three degrees of severity of congenital hip dislocation:

1. Predislocation (hypoplasia of the tegmen of acetabulum; but there is no dislocation of femoral bone, because its head is located in the middle of acetabulum).

2. Subluxation (except hypoplasia of the tegmen of acetabulum, there is also slight expressed displacement of the head of the femoral bone (thigh lateroposition).

3. Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip is the most serious degree of dysplasia of the hip joint. The head of the femoral bone absolutely loses touch with acetabulum and exceeds its bounds toward external side and upward. The child permanently limps because of the shortening of the diseased leg. This shortening is the result of hip dislocation; the length of the lower extremities remains equal.

Congenital shortenings of limbs can be caused by different factors:

- exogenous factors (incorrect fetal lie, mechanical injury of fetus and physical agents);

- endogenous factors (oligohydramnios, cord entanglement, prospective mother’s diseases);

- heredity

Most often, these above listed factors declare themselves as congenital amputations (amelia- absolute absence of the extremity; stump) and shortening or partial limb hypoplasia.

Acquired shortenings of limbs are usually the results of injuries: of fracture or traumatic amputation of the extremity (absolute or partial).

There are three types of shortening obtained by fracture:

- anatomical (true)shortening- dislocation of fragments endlong each other;

- dislocation (relative) shortening- injured extremity is shortened, the length of its segments remains equal;

- projecting (seeming) shortening- shortening caused by unnatural extremity position towards joint.
